Makoto Hirano
Filmmaker. Writer. Creative Director. Photographer.

A self-taught storyteller with a global outlook, Makoto Hirano began his creative journey in advertising at DYR Agency in New York City, where he explored film, theater, and photography. Born in Tokyo and raised in Egypt and the US, his passion for visual storytelling led him to Sydney, where he launched his film directing career, collaborating with creative leaders such as David Droga and earning accolades including two Cannes Lions and a British D&AD.
He later founded Beast Media, with locations in Tokyo, Los Angeles, and New York, providing creative direction and content for multinational clients including Sony, Toshiba, and Godiva. Over seven years, his direction on more than 35 commercials played a pivotal role in nearly tripling Godiva's sales across markets.
Outside of advertising, Makoto is a novelist and screenwriter represented by Susanna Lea Associates, a leading literary agency in London.
